Connected Living Brings Social Networking to Seniors

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

Social networking for seniors is something all together different. Products like Connected Living enables seniors, who are notoriously analogue, to communicate in new ways.  Think about that for a second.  Imagine the joy your grandfather or mom would feel if they were introduced to a communication tool that helped give them a louder, more creative and more up-to-date voice in a society that is notorious for silencing seniors.  Better late then never!  We love MyWay Village’s mission statement:

To enhance the lives of seniors by empowering them to connect with family, friends and community.

Connected Living Launch – Isle at Emerald Court, Tewksbury, MA

Friday, August 7th, 2009

We had another successful launch of Connected Living yesterday, this time at Isle at Emerald Court.

“The old will soon outnumber the young”

Friday, August 7th, 2009

So says no less a source than the US Census Bureau. In a report out recently the Bureau estimates that “People aged 65 and over will soon outnumber children under the age of 5 for the first time in history.” (You can read a shorter recap of the report here.)

Aging is a global phenomenon. People aged 80 and older are the fastest growing portion of the total population in many countries. As the ratio of workers to pensioners shrinks, while simultaneously people spend a larger portion of their lives in retirement, the demands on the overall health and pension system systems in many countries are severly strained.

There is no easy answer to this problem. But one solution that has been well documented is that preventative care is MUCH more cost effective in the long run. And what is one of the most important parts of health for a human being? Staying connected. People who are connected to family, friends, and their communities are much healthier and happier.

The current retirement system in the US (and worldwide) treats older people as a largely passive audience. But as we see everyday at MyWay Village, seniors have the desire and ability to learn new things and stay connected. And they have a strong sense of purpose. Too many memories, stories, and wisdom pass every day. Through our web-based portal and team of Ambassadors, we help seniors record their insights to share with others, especially family who can’t always be there in person.

The face of aging in this country (and the world) is changing. We at MyWay Village believe technology and connections will soon become an integral–and essential–part of life for older adults.

Connected Living in Chicago and Boston

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

There’s a very nice article on us and our efforts on the Senior Housing News website. The link to the article is here.

MyWay Village, a senior-focused technology company to help seniors get online in an easy and social way, recently announced it is a seeing dramatic increase in users at senior living communities throughout the country. The company just finished rolling out its Connected Living™ program with Chicago-based Brookdale in Boston and Chicago.

The company just finished rolling out its Connected Living™ program with Chicago-based Brookdale in Boston and Chicago. Residents at communities in both cities have shown up in record numbers for the launch events.

The initial participation has jumped from three percent to 36 percent active senior users who are now using the social media technology and personal training to stay connected with other residents, family and friends. More than 66 percent of residents have signed on to the community digital directory to put in a profile for others to see.

It is gratifying for all of us at MyWay Village to see such a reception for our program. We see everyday that seniors want to learn new things, especially when it allows them to connect with family and friends.

Tewksbury senior living community gets connected

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

The Tewksbury Advocate has an article today on our new Connected Living launch with Isle at Emerald Court!

Excerpt:
MyWay Village provides ongoing support to retirement communities, residents and their families through a team of “Ambassadors” who provide individualized help for seniors, and who lead group activities and classes on computer use, memoir sharing, and book clubs.

“It is our goal to foster an environment that encourages us to make a difference in the lives of our residents,” said Dan Carignan, executive director for Isle at Emerald Court. “The personal support of an Ambassador is an ideal way to help our first time computer users get online.”

“Seniors are excited to participate,” said Sarah Hoit, CEO and Co-Founder of MyWay Village. “They have so much to share, and once connected, are spending hours writing memoirs and messaging with their families. Families now have a better communication link to their loved ones. It gives them peace of mind.”

Profile in The Patriot Ledger

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

We had a very nice profile this morning in The Patriot Ledger as a result of our successful River Bay Club launch. Highlights include:

“At least 123 of the 308 residents of the River Bay Club senior apartments have joined the new online Connected Living program, developed by MyWay Village.

With one-to-one personal instruction and support from trained “ambassadors,” the residents are using the computers to communicate with family members as far away as Central America, share photos, write memoirs and form new friendships. The program is a closed system, with passwords and registration.

The ambassadors show the Brookdale residents how to use a customized home page. Residents can choose from a variety of activities, including sending and receiving e-mail, sharing and viewing photographs, listening to audio books and music, recording their own personal memoirs, and receiving notifications of events happening daily at their residence.”

New Launch at River Bay Club in Quincy, MA

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Today we had a wonderful launch at a new community, the River Bay Club in Quincy, MA. Over 123 residents have already joined the online Connected Living program, setting up their profiles, adding friends and family members to their community, and exploring the rich array of options available on our simplified interface.

A successful launch is the result of weeks of careful planning, both with administrators and residents. It was incredibly gratifying to attend the launch yesterday and to witness the difference we’re making in these communities and in the lives of their residents.
